NeighborWorks VISTA Gainesville

In response to the demand for affordable housing, NHDC will enhance its current programs to serve more families in need. We have been offering community building, housing and credit counseling to low and moderate income families for more than 25 years. With our neighborhoods under siege from the foreclosure crisis and the depletion of affordable housing resources our efforts to support families has to be redoubled. We are part of a national program in which VISTAs will be placed at community based organizations (Neighbor Works America ) throughout the country. MHDC and our VISTA person will be actively involved in building collaborations, seeking financial resources, and deloping internal organizational and programmatic efficiencies that will enhance customer service and built personal and community assets.

Housing Development by NHDC in Florida Recognized as  “Green Success Story”

A new project developed by Neighborhood Housing and Development Corporation(NHDC), a NeighborWorks network member, was featured in the Spring 2008 issue of Florida Housing Coalition’s Housing News Network journal for its affordable, green features.  NHDC’s North Point at Ironwood development is certified by Florida Green Building Coalition because of its Energy Star features, water efficiency, lot choice, healthy materials and home buyer education.  North Point is one of several developments that will be recognized as a “green success story” during Florida Housing Coalition’s statewide national conference September 15-17.  Learn more [PDF] (pages 18-20)

NHDC has won the NAHRO Award of Merit for our work at North Point at Ironwood

Neighborhood Housing and Development Corporation (NHDC) has been named a 2007 recipient of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) Merit Award in the Community Revitalization Category for its North Point at Iron Wood residential sub-division.

The award recognizes outstanding achievement in housing and community development programs through the nation, and will be presented to David Herkalo, NHDC Executive Director, at the NAHRO Summer Conference July 20, in Chicago. The North Point at Iron Wood project is also being considered for a NAHRO National Award of Excellence; the winners will be announced in October.

“NAHRO members are consistently on the forefront of innovation in the affordable housing industry,” said NAHRO President Donald J. Cameron. “The work of our Awards of Excellence winners help Americans nationwide turn units into homes, and downtowns into economic engines.”

The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials is a 74-year-old membership organization of 3,200 housing and community development agencies and 19,500 professionals throughout the United States whose mission is to create affordable housing and safe, viable communities that enhance the quality of life for all Americans, especially those of low-and moderate-income. NAHRO ensures that housing and community development professionals have the leadership skills and education to serve communities; advocates for appropriate laws and policies; and fosters the highest standards of ethical behavior, service and accountability.
